The project stems from the idea of reviving the square, currently used as a car park, as a social gathering place for citizens and promoting the opening of new businesses in the historic centre of Rapolano Terme. The parking spaces will be removed and traffic will be maintained along the western front up to Largo Fratelli Cervi, while in the eastern section, the difference in height will be eliminated by creating two horizontal levels, staggered and connected by steps and seating. This solution involves earthworks and therefore a mandatory excavation in the area of intervention. All underground services (gas, rainwater and sewage drains) in the square will therefore be adapted. The electrical system will also be channelled with the installation of retractable towers for electrical and multimedia sockets and public lighting, which will also be provided on the ground with step lights, in addition to lighting with spotlights on overhead cables. All unused wires from existing public systems will be removed at the same time. The paving will be made with reclaimed travertine slabs; on the connecting line between the current level, maintained in front of the existing buildings, and the project level, there will be steps, which will serve as seating, interspersed with steps and “basins” for flower beds, also covered with travertine slabs. The car parking spaces provided for in the project are exclusively for two temporary parking spaces. The aim of the design was to create a project that was fully integrated with the context, both architecturally and technically/functionally, seeking quality, aesthetic value and usability of the spaces by the community.
